Mrs. Pring, age 101 years, passed away February 6, 2010 at Grandhaven Living Center in Lansing, Michigan. She was born in Canandiagua, NY on November 15, 1908 to the late Irving Cody and Edith Belle (Fairbairn) Metcalf. Edith graduated from William Smith College in Geneva, NY in the class of 1930 and taught Home Economics in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC to Congressman’s wives on the Hill, and Bay City, Michigan. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Women for over 50 years. In addition, she was an active member and past president of A.A.U.W. and volunteered for over 25 years at Bay Health System. Her interests included knitting, cooking, card games, grandchildren’s activities and the growth of the great-grandchildren.
On July 2, 1938, she married Lewis Dan Pring and he preceded her in death on August 10, 1970. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Frank) Carman of Lansing, MI, 2 sons: Dan Pring of Grand Haven, MI and Jim (Louise) Pring of Wanganui, New Zealand, grandchildren: Susan (Ben) Davenport and Deborah (Greg) Peckham of Lansing, MI; Matt (Jill) Pring of Muskegon, MI; Sarah and Jane Pring of Wanganui, New Zealand, great-grandchildren: Zach, Ryan & Hayden Peckham, Ariana & Elyse Davenport and one unborn great-grandchild, a brother-in-law, Hugh Travis of VA and nieces and nephews in NY, CA, TX, VA, FL and OR. She was preceded in death by brothers: Robert (Jean) Metcalf and Clarence (Alice) Metcalf and sisters: Helen Wilson and Dorothea Travis.
Funeral and committal services will be on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey D. Weenink will officiate. Private burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home on Friday from 1-4 & 6-8 p.m. She will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time. Memorial contributions can be made to First Presbyterian Kitchen Fund, A.A.U.W. Scholarship Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Van Driessche, Harold A.
Bay City, Michigan
Age 82 years, died February 7, 2010 at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor. He was born in Saginaw on December 25, 1927 to the late Henry and Louise (Fischer) Van Driessche.
Harold retired from Dow Chemical Co. in Midland after 33 years as special project engineer. He was a member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Harold is survived by his wife, the former Mary Swartz, whom he married August 14, 1948. He also leaves 3 children: Gail (Jack) Luke, Henry (Lou Ann) Van Driessche and Brian (Kimberly) Van Driessche, a son-in-law Daniel Hauch, 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Cynthia K. Hauch on April 22, 2008, a brother George Van Driessche and a sister Doris LaPrairie.
Funeral service will be Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mark M. Schulz will officiate. Burial will be at Floral Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home. He will lie in state at the Church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service.
LOREE, Howard J. (Jim), age 70, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010, at the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, after struggling with cancer. He was born May 29, 1939 in Bay City. He worked in the construction business for over 30 years, having worked in Houston, TX, Lansing, MI and Bay City, MI. He took great pride in his workmanship with the many jobs he worked on. Jim loved working in his garden and preparing gourmet meals with the fruits of his labor. He also enjoyed reading, fishing and golfing. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and loved being with them and watching them grow. He served his country with the U.S. Army. His winning smile and great wit will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Mr. Loree is survived by his mother, Phyllis (Mosher) Harwood; loving daughter Kimberly Ellis (Mark Buda); grandchildren Brandon Ellis, Greg Smith (fiancée Aimee), Chelsea (Mick) Wolcott and Hannah Smith and; great-grandchildren Briley and Leah Wolcott, and Brandon and Hayden Ellis; brothers; Terry (Teresa) Loree, Douglas Harwood, Jack (Jean) Loree, Rick (Beth) Loree, Joe Loree, and Larry Loree, son-in-law Brian Smith; former wife Barbara Valead and her son Greg; also several aunts, uncles nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Joseph H. Loree, his loving daughter Barbara Jo Smith, and a sister-in-law Roberta Harwood. Friends may call at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home on Monday, February 8th, from 2-5 p.m. with Military Rites under the direction of the Bay County Veterans Council taking place at 3 p.m.
Schmidt, Margaret Louise
Essexville, Michigan
Age 87 years, died February 1, 2010 at Brian’s House-Bay. She was born in Bay City on October 18, 1922 to the late Chester and Florence (Buhler) Roueche. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Surviving are 3 children: Sandra Kelly, Michael (Karen) Schmidt and Diane (Chuck) Moyer, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Schmidt, on December 6, 2001.
Funeral and committal service will be Thursday February 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home. The Rev. Leslie D. Tyvela will officiate. Memorial tributes may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Brian’s House-Bay. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
HOORNSTRA, Sharon K. (Lewis)

Mrs. Sharon Kay Hoornstra, age 65 years, passed away Wednesday evening, January 27, 2010 at Woodland Hospice in Mt. Pleasant. She was born on July 1, 1944 in Saginaw, Michigan the daughter of the late Hubert and Birdie (Haskins) Lewis. On January 30, 1963 Sharon married John W. Hoornstra at the First Presbyterian Church in Vassar. Sharon was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was the organist for 42years.
Surviving family include her husband of 47 years, John W. “Jack”; her children, John L. (Dianna) of Frankenmuth, James W. (Vicki) of Grayling and Susan (Brian) Godde of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Monica, John H., Nichole, Celesta, Trudy and Christi; also surviving are her sister, Youtha Jacot of Ft. Myers and several nieces and nephews. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, James.
Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Vassar. Pastor John W. Becker officiating. The family will greet friends from 12 noon until the time of the service. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church of Vassar. Barrow, Wendell (“Wendy”)
Essexville, Michigan
Mr. Barrow, age 84 years, passed away January 27, 2010 at Brian’s House-Bay. He was born in Adrian, Michigan on April 20, 1925 to the late Harold and Olive (Bloomer) Barrow. Wendy retired after 41 years from the Bay City Public Schools where he was the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds. He had a special place in his heart for T.L. Handy High School where he spent most of his career. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the Great Lakes Maritime Museum, as well as being very active with the Boy Scouts of America.
On May 5, 1951, he married the former Eileen M. Wittkopp in Bay City and she preceded him in death on March 26, 2009. Survivors include 3 children: Wendy (Gene) Rhynard, Sheri (Jan) Jankowiak and Mike Barrow, 2 grandchildren: Kevin Tovey and Kara Tovey, currently serving with the United States Marine Corp., and 3 great-grandchildren: Samara, Kevin and Maden. He was preceded in death by a special aunt, Mary Bloomer.
Funeral Liturgy will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Robert J. DeLand will preside with Rite of Committal following at St. Patrick’s Mausoleum. Friends may call at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home on Friday from 2-8 p.m. with a Vigil for the Deceased taking place at 6 p.m. He will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or St. James Catholic Church Heritage Fund.

DOUD, Helen M.

Age 94 years, died January 9, 2010. She was born in Munger, MI on March 31, 1915 to the late Fred and Lena (Krause) Ahrens. She married Floyd L. Doud on January 9, 1935 and he preceded her in death on December 7, 1999. Helen was retired from Caro Regional Center.
Survivors include 3 sons: Nelson (Merlene) Doud, Don (Kathleen) Doud and Robert (Regina) Doud, 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, a sister Marion Spychalski, 2 sisters-in-law: Dorothy Kraynak and Mabel Rachwitz and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, 2 sisters and 5 brothers.
Funeral service will be Friday, January 15, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home. The Rev. Kurt W. Eichinger will officiate. Burial will be at Floral Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m.

JACOBS, Edna Marie

Age 86 years, died January 11, 2010. She was born in Bay City on April 27, 1923 to the late Phillip and Alma (Ruterbush) Wagner. Edna married Clarence B. “Lefty” Jacobs on November 5, 1949 and he preceded her in death on April 4, 1998. She was a member of Trinity St. James Lutheran Church.
Survivors include 5 children: Larry A. (Cheryl) Jacobs, David C. (Bonita) Jacobs, James C. (Michele) Jacobs, Kathleen A. (David) Bachman and Jeanine M. Jacobs, 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, a sister Wilma “Sid” Stewart and a brother Florian “Zeke” Wagner. She was preceded in death by a son Richard Phillip Jacobs.
